In the fall of 2006, a year after the devastation of hurricane Katrina and the aftermath of the floods, Amelie Prescott proposed an indigenous art therapy program to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School for Science and Technology for all grades, which recently graduated its first senior class. The program's mission is to allow students to express themselves through various art forms, permitting them to process traumatic experiences in order to develop strong selves, which are then integrated with family, school and community. The work has been successful and is continuing to promote health in the Lower Ninth Ward and Treme.
